If you book through internet it will automatically get cancelled. You will be treated as ticket-less passenger. If the same is purchased over railway counter it can be used to travel in a unreserved compartment. The best way to travel by unreserved compartment is with unreserved ticket. Using tatkal ticket is expensive. You can cancel the ticket and get full refund.

New Tatkal ticket booking rules - New Tatkal Ticket Rules from 10th July 2012 ,New Tatkal  Booking Timings from 10th July 2012 Railway Board reviewed the tatkal scheme, which was introduced to help passengers travelling on emergency. However, there have been increased complaints that passengers have been unable to exploit the scheme properly, thanks to the role of touts.

Despite a number of changes carried out in the scheme in the recent past including reducing the days for reserving tatkal tickets from five to only one day and barring web-based agents from booking tickets during the first hours, touts continued to exploit the scheme, selling tatkal tickets at a premium.

At present, tatkal scheme is available in around 2677 trains which translates to around 1.71 lakh berths. In 2011-12, earning from the scheme stood at Rs 847 crore.

Gupta said CRIS, the IT wing of railways and IRCTC, will audit the tatkal programme to plug the loopholes to check irregularities.

Other measures like allowing reservation of only one ticket from a computer system is also being looked into.

Meanwhile, RPF has posted two special teams to keep a watch on touts crowding booking counters while policing will be stepped up in ticketing offices to arrest unauthorised vendors and the touts.

Even as more than 900 touts have been apprehended over the last one year, Gupta said 100 to 200 touts were caught only in the last couple of weeks due to the stepped up efforts to take on them.

He said steps were also being contemplated for manning of the automatic vending machine at railway platforms.

It all depends on your luck. If you are lucky, someone who booked TATKAL, will cancel the ticket.
-The chances of cancelling a confirmed tatkal ticket is very less, becuase railway will not refund anything for confirm tatkal ticket cancalation. (Refund=0).
- Looking to this, you just have to pray to god and wait for your ticket to be confirmed.

Note- If your ticket is not confirmed, you can not travel on the ticket and you will get the refund automatically after deduction.

If I booked online tatkal ticket, after that I got waiting,
Now I want to cancel this ticket before 24 hrs with unconfirmed status, then how much amount will be refund.
As your ticket is a wait listed tatkal ticket (CKWL) then only 20 Rs. per passengers will be deducted and remaining amount will be refunded in your account within 3-4 working days....
Only Rs. 20/- per head will be deducted irrespective class of journey.

Absolutley no refund what so ever.Reason being they have kept this quota called TATKAL which means immediate, meant for last minute travellers.

So incase you dont travel you loose all the cash.

It sounds mean but i think its right , because people who plan well in advance sometimes dont get because its full, then they take RAC or W/L tickets.

If these tatkal passengers dont travel these w/l or RAC passengers benefit.

in tatkal reservation is only source to destination means end to end ?? or any station to to destinatio? or any station to any station?
in the indian railway website they told to any station to any station means not necessary to end to end reservation...
but in the other site railway(for online we can book- www.irctc.co.in) they say end to end reservation.
so i am confused

 you can book tatkal from any station to any station means not necessary to end to end, or any major station to any station. example
Matsyagandha express travels from mangalore to mumbai via madgaon (goa). you can book in tatkal from Goa to mumbai in the same train which has a stoppage of 10 mins (since it is a major station).
well i did that last week to and fro hassle free...

Tatkal Reservation Rules
Tatkal booking opens at 8 AM on Two days in advance actual date of journey excluding date of journey w.e.f. of 01-08-2009*, e.g. for train leaving on 6th, Tatkal Booking will Commence at 8 AM on 4th.
No identity proof is required to be produced by the passenger seeking reservation under tatkal scheme neither at the time of booking nor during the journey.
Instead of full coach being presently nominated as Tatkal Coach, there will be Tatkal quota in each train in 2A, 3A, AC Chair Car, Sleeper and 2S (Second Sitting) classes as under:

There will be no separate Tatkal train defined. The unutilised Tatkal quota will get released to waitlisted passengers.
Tatkal charges have been revised as under:

The facility of change of name is not permitted on the bookings made under Tatkal scheme.
The reservation under Tatkal scheme shall be available only upto the time of preparation of charts.
For the purpose of granting refunds & issuing TDRs for W/L, the time limit will be the same as applicable for refund of normal tickets.
The booking in Tatkal scheme will be done only from originating to terminating point of the train with boarding facility from intermediate station. However, Zonal railways have been given the discretion of imposing restrictions on Tatkal booking regarding defining trains as end-to-end or keeping it free or imposing distance restrictions etc. Keeping in view the over all utilization of the accommodation available in the train.
Refunds - A flat refund of 25% of total fare charged on the ticket, excluding tatkal charge is granted on cancellation of tatkal ticket, which is presented for cancellation upto 24 hours before the scheduled departure of the train. If the party has been accommodated in lower class and does not want to travel. In case the party travels in lower class, the passenger will be given refund of difference of fare and also the difference of Tatkal charges, if any

I have booked 2 Tier Ac tickets in TATKAL today but i was waiting list No's 3 & 4, will i get refund ?

 No refund is done. I have an idea instead of cancelling the ticket you can sell that to some one who is needed of it...

go to railway reservation counter and fill reservation/cancelation form with detail which is u fill reservation time and submit to any counter

The Indian railway tatkal seat availability depends on the season and peak hours which can be enquired accordingly. The Indian railways tatkal facility is introduced in all the trains from Sleeper class to the Executive Class with uniform charges both in peak periods and non-peak periods. The Indian railway tatkal seat availability can be checked from the railway counters and reservations can be done after satisfaction of the passengers which starts two days before the journey. Recently Indian Railway some amendments on Tatkal quota. No refund will be allowed for cancellation of Tatkal quota booked Tickets.

As we know, Tatkal quota is fixed number of seats in every train.

So, there is no refund for cancellation in such case who will go for cancellation if booked in Tatkal scheme?1. Tatkal Advance Reservation Period reduced to one day – i.e., 24 hours other than date of travel.
2. Maximum of four passengers per ticket (earlier six).
3. ID card (as already notified) of at least one passenger required at the time of booking.
a)A self-attested xerox copy of ID card should be enclosed with application form.
b)If the declared ID holder is not travelling the other passengers need to provide their ID (at least one of the passengers) at the time of partial cancellation.
c)If the holder is not travelling, all other passengers will also be declared as without ticket and penalty levied.
4. No refund on confirmed tatkal tickets.However, full refunds allowed only for contingency cases such as “Train Cancelled”/Tatkal coach not available.
5. Duplicate tickets will not be issued.However, duplicate tickets will be issued on collection of full fare including Tatkal charges – only on contingency cases.
6. Agents/RTSAs/Web service agents shall be restricted from booking Tatkal tickets at the counters between 08.00 hrs. and 10.00 hrs.

If you cancel a waiting list tatkal ticket, no money will be refunded to you. If you have tatkal WL ticket, its better leave it. Because If your ticket did not get confirmed, then you will get your refund automatically. But if it gets confirmed then no refund. So its better leave it to railways.

You need not cancel the waitlisted e-ticket.. The ticket automatically gets cancelled and money will automatically get back to your account..after deducting some 10 or 20 rs..
*If a tatkal ticket is wait listed even at the time of chart preparation, Railways will deduct only clerk-age charges and credit back the balance amount to your bank account without any specific request from you.

if you don't want to travel,cancel the wait listed E-ticket.
you should also be aware if the E-ticket is not confirmed cancellation and refund process are automatic.
if ticket is confirmed at the time chart preparation,and you want to cancel the ticket,you should follow what is called TDR. and refund would take months to process

• After chart preparation if your tatkal e- ticket is still remain as a fully waitlisted ticket it will automaticaly get canclled and the money will be refunded to your account,but RS20/per passenger willbe deducted as cancelation charges

The above charges will be levied uniformly both in peak period & non-peak periods.
Tatkal tickets will be issued for actual distance of travel, instead of end-to-end, subject to the distance restriction applicable to the train. The same Tatkal berth/seat may be booked in multiple legs till preparation of charts. At the time of preparation of charts, unutilized portion may be released to the General RAC/Waiting list passengers.
Tatkal facility will be introduced in Executive Class of Shatabadi Express trains also, by earmarking 10% of the accommodation available i.e. 5 seats per coach.
Tatkal booking opens at 8 AM on One days in advance actual date of journey excluding date of journey w.e.f. of 21.11.2011(commercial circular no:59 of 2011). e.g. for train leaving on 6th, Tatkal Booking will Commence at 8 AM on 5th.
No duplicate Tatkal tickets shall be issued. Duplicate Tatkal tickets shall be issued only in exceptional cases on payment of full fare including Tatkal
charges.
Tatkal tickets shall be issued only on production of one of the eight prescribed proofs of identity (as mentioned in Commercial Circular No.5 of 2011 issued vide letter No.2010/TG.I/20/P/Tatkal dated 28.01.2011) as per procedure explained below:-

a. For this purpose, a self attested photo copy of the proof of identity of anyone passenger shall be attached to the requisition slip.

b. The details of the identity proof shall be captured by the system and indicated on the reserved tickets as well on the reservation chart.

c. It will not be mandatory for the passenger(s) to go to the counter to book the Tatkal ticket, however, the proof will have to be sent in the
aforementioned manner.

d. During the journey, the passenger, whose identity card number has been indicated on the ticket, will have to produce original proof of identity indicated on the ticket, failing which all the passengers booked on the ticket shall be treated as traveling without ticket and charged accordingly. Indication will come on the ticket regarding carrying the same original proof of identity during the journey, as indicated on the ticket.

e. If the passenger whose identity card number is indicated on the ticket is not traveling, all other passengers booked on that ticket, if found
traveling in train, will be treated as traveling without ticket and charged accordingly.
